The 18th episode of the 4th season «Vikings» is titled «Revenge» and gives us a first taste of the army of Vikings that is banding together to murder the legendary Ragnar Lothbrok, King of Denmark , to avenge. Even Ivar, handicapped by his disability, gets involved, thanks to Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) who built him a horse-drawn carriage. Ragnar has long feared that his sons would one day surpass him in glory. This fear should now come true.
The time of revenge is here! «Vikings» Season 4 sheds light on another historical phenomenon, the Great Pagan Army, which brought together numerous Vikings to fight together. King Aelle will soon regret his actions. Northumbria must tremble at the wrath of the Vikings. Aelle's daughter Judith tried to warn him in the 17th episode, but too late. Ragnar's sons are already plotting their attack on Northumbria to avenge their father's death. But not only King Aelle should suffer. All of England should get the feeling that you don't mess with the barbaric warriors from Denmark. Björn (Alexander Ludwig) has returned to Kattegat to go to war with his half-brothers Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen), Hvitserk (Marco Islø), Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and Sigurd (David Lindstron). They lead the famous «Great Pagan Army», which can also be read about in the history books. In the promo clip, Björn aggressively announces to his brothers that it will be he who will lead the army and give the orders to the warriors. However, Ivar's laughter suggests he has other plans of his own when the battle against the British begins.
Since Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) died, it's not just his grown-up sons who have been plotting revenge. Numerous warriors want to join them in battle to pay tribute to their famous father. To bring their enemies to their knees, Ragnar's sons need a mighty army, said to be even greater than that with which Ragnar set out for Paris. In this context, we met some new characters in the 17th episode. One of these is particularly interesting because, like Ragnar and his sons, he actually once lived. We are talking about the Viking Egil (Charlie Kelly), who is introduced to Harald Schönhaar (Peter Franzen). According to American site Inquisitr, the character could be based on poet and warrior Egil Skallagrimsson, who was remembered as a moody and ugly man. In the TV series, Egil is noticed with half of his face disfigured, which could be an indication of a connection. As the US site further reports, Egil is said to have been born in Iceland and to be Kveld-Ulf's grandson. He was nicknamed the "Evening Wolf" because he was said to be a shapeshifter with superhuman powers.
What is interesting, however, is the connection between Egil's family and Harald, which has not yet been discussed in the series, but could play a role in the 5th season of "Vikings". Because it was Harald Fairhair who, at least according to the saga, killed Egil's uncle Thorolf. Egil's father Skalla-Grim and his famous grandfather Kevld-Ulf avenged Thorolf's murder by killing some of King Harald's men before leaving Norway for good. The family eventually traveled to Iceland, where Egil was born and, like his father Skalla-Grim, grew into a rather ugly man with a talent for poetry. The question remains: If it is the same Egil, will his story also find a place in «Vikings»? At least it shouldn't be a coincidence that Egil and King Harald meet in the 17th episode of Season 4 "Bad Blood". Perhaps Egil also conceals his true origin and thus becomes a confidante in the ranks of Harald Fairhair. Until he gets the chance to kill King Harald and get revenge for driving his family out of Norway and murdering his uncle Thorolf.
In any case, the "Great Heathen Army" consisted of thousands of Vikings who set out for England to plunder large parts of the country in raids and to conquer numerous areas. According to legend, the army was under the command of Ragnar Lothbrok's sons. The trigger was then - as in the TV series - the death of Ragnar by King Aelle. According to the story of the legendary Viking's sons, Ivar insisted on killing King Aelle with the help of the blood eagle to avenge his father. "Vikings" already showed how cruel the ritual with the blood eagle is in the second season with Jarl Borg.
